Ernest Gold was a composer born in Austria in 1921 and immigrated to the United States in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution. Gold composed the score for the 1960 film, "Exodus," starring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint. The film, based on the 1958 novel by Leon Uris, tells the story of the founding of the state of Israel. Gold's soundtrack for "Exodus" won an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1961, and the main theme, "Theme from Exodus," became a popular song covered by various artists. The film's score is characterized by its use of Jewish folk melodies and the dramatic orchestration of large choral pieces. Ernest Gold died in 1999, leaving behind a legacy of iconic film scores, including "On the Beach" and "Judgment at Nuremberg."
